Pentecost

I have recounted the story of the day of Pentecost, and the signs and wonders that followed in the early church. Please be sure and visit the website "Speaking in tongues" by clicking on the dove at the bottom of this page.

"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."(Acts 2:1-4)

"But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them,

Ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: for these are not drunken as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams..." "Then they that gladly recieved his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls." (Acts 2:41)

"And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to recieve something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones recieved strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God..." (Acts 3:2-8)

"And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women. Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them." (Acts 5:14,15)

"And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south ...And he arose and went, and behold a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasure, had come to Jerusalem for to worship, was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Isaiah the prophet...And Philip ran thither...and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?...the place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth; In his humiliation his judgement was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus." (Acts 8:26-35)

"On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: And he became very hungry, and woud have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, and saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. And there came a voice unto him, Rise Peter, kill and eat. But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean. And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou uncommon. This was done thrice: and the vessel was recieved up again into heaven. Now...Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean...Then Peter opened up his mouth and said, of a truth I percieve that God is no respecter of persons...the Holy Ghost fell on all them that heard the word...because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues...Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life." (Acts 10:9 -Acts 11:18)

"Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church...he proceeded further to take Peter also...Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him." (Acts 12:1,5)

St. Peter in prison.jpg

"...the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell of from his hands. And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. And he went out, and followed him; and knew not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. When they were past the first and second guard, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened unto them of his its own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him." PENTECOST INSIGHT: The gospel story culminates in the giving of the Holy Spirit, and one manifestation of it is Speaking in a foreign tongue which God miraculously gives to pray and praise Him. A large part of the Bible, Old Testament and New Testament, deals with this gift.
